Universiti Malaysia Sarawak was officially incorporated on 24th December 1992. With about 30 academic staffs, the university open its doors to the first batch of 118 students. Back then, the university has only two faculities, Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Resource Science and Technology both of which were supported by Centre of Applied Learning & Multimedia and the Centre for Academic Information Services. Over the years, UNIMAS experienced a period of tremendous growth, both in academic excellence and campus populations. UNIMAS is an ISO-certified university and has also been granted MSC Status on November 2003. UNIMAS has also won the Premiere Information Technology Award from the Malaysian Government, the “Bridging the Digital Divide” category of AFACT’s eAsia Award. It has also won the Industry Innovators Award for System Development and Application from the US-based Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), for its success in setting up a telecentre in the remote community of Bario, Sarawak, to assist the community in communication, education, e-commerce, health and government services. Today, UNIMAS has a total population of 7500 within its campus in Kota Samarahan.


The Challenge:
  • The challenge arises when the university CICTS(Centre for Information & Communication Technology and Science) decided to expand its Fast Ethernet services to cover 4 different locations within the campus. The distances factor of the 4 different locations simply rule out optical fiber solution as laying fiber would be too costly to be feasible.
  • CITCS deployed WiFi, also known as 802.11b, but the system could only deliver a mere 6 Mbps of throughput and is simply not sufficient to cater to UNIMAS huge number of population.
  • To provide a reliable, disturbance-free and affordable optical wireless connection at 100 MBps Fast Ethernet LAN connectivity for their Alamanda and Bunga Raya College, both of which are not connected to UNIMAS Ethernet LAN, due to distances and landscape.
  • Need to come up with a high-speed connectivity solution that would not be affected by storms, heavy rain, haze and other extreme weather conditions over an operating distance of about 600 meters in the shortest possible deployment time.

The Solution:

  • FSO Technologies & Solutions Sdn Bhd, a solution provider for FSO technology for Malaysian market and a preferred LightPointe Flight Partner, took up the challenge.
  • FSO Technologies installed the field proven LightPointe Extended range optical wireless system, FL100E system was set up to bridge Alamanda College and FRST Building. The other pair of FL100E system is used to bridge the connection between FIT and Bunga Raya College..
  • The link was up and running by 3rd day of installation and UNIMAS ran a series of verification testing on data and video on the same day.
  • FlightLite 100E was subjected to vigorous test runs as UNIMAS began transferring massive data and video between the these buildings. FL100E brought high-speed connectivity to both Alamanda and Bunga Raya College. So far, the FSO Technologies & Solutions received no complains from UNIMAS of any FSO system down time, thus further strengthening its reputation of being one of the most reliable systems in the market today.
